FT 300 Ranking-Advisers_Logo_2020_8i.jpg
Financial Times FT 300
Methodology (From The Financial Times)

We present the FT 300 as an elite group, not a competitive ranking of one to 300. This is the fairest way to identify the industry’s elite advisers while accounting for the companies’ different approaches and specializations.

The Financial Times and Ignites Research, the FT’s sister company, invited qualifying RIA companies — more than 2,000 — to complete a lengthy application that gave us more information about them. The formula the FT uses to grade advisers is based on six broad factors and calculates a numeric score for each adviser. Areas of consideration include AUM, asset growth, the company’s age, industry certifications of key employees, SEC compliance record and online accessibility. The reasons these were chosen are as follows:

  • AUM signals experience managing money and client trust.

  • AUM growth rate can be a proxy for performance, as well as for asset retention and the ability to generate new business. We assessed companies on three-year growth rates.

  • Companies’ years in existence indicates reliability and experience of managing assets through different market environments.

  • Compliance record provides evidence of past client disputes; a string of complaints can signal potential problems.

  • Industry certifications (CFA, CFP, etc.) shows the company’s staff has industry knowledge and a professional commitment to investment skills.

  • Online accessibility shows a desire to provide easy access and transparent contact information.

Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisors
Methodology (From Expertise)

Each year, PLANADVISER magazine recognizes the top quantitative standouts from our Retirement Plan Adviser Survey with the Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers awards. Top 100 designees are named according to the dollar value of qualified plan assets under advisement, as well as the number of plans under advisement.

To become eligible for this quantitative listing, advisers must complete the annual PLANADVISER Retirement Plan Adviser Survey, fielded each September. Respondents are divided into categories for evaluation, defined by the number of advisers, plus support staff, in the practice.

Centre For Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX)

Adherence to a Standard:

CEFEX-certified firms adhere to a standard representing the best practices in their industry. The standards include specific criteria which have been substantiated by regulation or written in consultation with leading firms.

A successfully completed standards-based assessment results in certification. This is written assurance that the firm meets the requirements of the standard.

Verified by Annual Audits:

CEFEX certified firms voluntarily undertake annual audits by independent expert analysts. This continually verifies their adherence to the applicable standard and is supplemental to oversight performed by regulators, or financial auditors.

Professionalism:

Annual audits maximize professionalism within the firm because management is required to keep up-to-date with best practices.

The CEFEX audit fosters a culture of continuous improvement within the firm and increases transparency and accountability of the management team.

CEFEX certification increases trust. In a time of financial industry change, trust is critical to firms which provide fiduciary functions and those that provide support services. Investors and Stewards of retirement plans, endowments and foundations are continually looking for proof of integrity.

A full copy of the standard can be downloaded at www.cefex.org.

CEFEX (Centre for Fiduciary Excellence) is an independent global assessment and certification organization that has conducted a voluntary third-party assessment of DBR & CO's books and records to evaluate DBR & CO's adherence to a defined fiduciary standard. CEFEX certification should not be construed as a current or past endorsement by any of its clients.
